Travel blog spontaneous

I very recently watched the amazing film that is The Secret Life of Walter Mitty and I cried. At first I was like

‘Why are you crying? Nothing sad is happening yet?!’

But then I realised why the film was effecting me so much, it was because I realised that I was Walter Mitty, I had spent years of my life dreaming about a more exciting life, a life where I could travel and see the world. That’s what they had always been though, dreams and fantasies.

I’ve always been a daydreamer, ever since I was a kid, but with constant mental health issues for most of my teen and adult life, I had never thought of acting on my travel dreams… until now, until I decided to do a Walter Mitty and say ‘f**k it’.

How I Learned to Say F**k It

I first learned to say ‘f**k it’ when I started having my first round of counselling, but it’s only been since turning 27 and having a mild, late-twenties life crisis, that the true ‘f**k it’ mentality has kicked me firmly up the arse.

A few years ago, I made yet another plan to go travelling, this had been a pattern of mine ever since I left school, but this time I was 100% certain. I started saving up a decent amount of money and I was going to head to Canada on a working holiday. Then I found a job I loved and once again, the travel plans got pushed to the bottom of my to-do list.

However, last year, I realised that if I wanted to take advantage of the easier and cheaper working holiday visas available to me, I needed to get a move on. With many work abroad programmes ceasing to exist for those in the over 30’s club, panic quickly set in.

I remember the exact moment I thought about my first ‘f**k it’, I was lying on my bed, dreaming, once again, of travelling the world in a campervan and making awesome travel vlogs. Then I thought about my life, then and there, everything I had and everything I had to lose and I thought ‘f**k it’ and called up BUNAC to put my deposit down for Work New Zealand.

What did I really have to lose? Jobs come and go, there will always be something out there no matter where I am, plus I work freelance for a lot of my work, so I can do that anywhere! My family aren’t going anywhere, my friends are already spread out across the country and even the world. Just one ‘f**k it’ was all it took and I had taken one giant leap to living the life I had always dreamed about!

One of my Biggest Fears is Dying Without Actually Living

Can you imagine getting to the end of your life and looking back over everything you’ve done, only to realise you’ve not really experienced any of the world?

That terrifies me.

Even as a child I could never understand why someone would live a life they didn’t love. Our lives are the one thing we have control over. We choose our actions and what effect they have over our lives, we just need to get of our arses and do it.

Since I booked my China trek and my New Zealand trip, I have had so many people say to me:

Oh it’s alright for some!

or

You’re so lucky! I wish I could do that!

But the thing is, I’m not lucky’ I’ve embraced the art of ‘f**k it’ and I’m reaping the rewards. There is hardly any difference between my life and theirs, we both work in office jobs, we’re both earning average wages, we both have similar support systems.

The difference between us is our actions.

I made a choice about my life, I could have chosen to let another travel dream slip away, but instead I thought ‘f**k it’ and I made a dream happen. I could have chosen to use the money I’d saved on a deposit on a new home, settled down and made my peace with being in the same job for the foreseeable future, but again, I thought ‘f**k it’ and took that leap into the unknown.

Fjallraven Kanken Backpack Review

People keep asking me what my plan is, but I don’t have one. I’m going to take the ‘f**k it’ way of life and see where I end up, what’s the worst that could happen?

  • You end up being homeless and sleeping on the streets – I won’t though, there are hostels everywhere, I work freelance and I have years of experience in multiple different job sectors, what’s the odds that I won’t be able to find anywhere to sleep or make money, seriously.
  • What if you get injured or sick? – They have hospitals in other countries, I have insurance, bodies heal.
  • What if you run out of money!? – I always keep emergency dosh saved no matter what, I’m good at juggling money, I work online so I will always have access to some sort of work, I can always ask a family member or a friend to lend me money if I’m absolutely desperate!

There is literally a solution to everything, you will never be in a completely hopeless and unsolvable situation, it’s just not possible!

So please, if you haven’t yet adopted the ‘f**k it’ way of life, I urge you to. The next time you’re deliberating whether to take that amazing leap into something wonderful, just think ‘f**k it’ and jump right in.
