find cheapest flights

So you want to pay as little as possible for your flights, don’t we all! Flights these days can be from one extreme to the other, you can grab a return trip to Munich for about £40, but try and get a trip booked to Iceland and you’re looking at absolute dollar just to get there!

When you love to travel solo, like myself, you may find you have to work on a very tight budget, which means saving as much moolar on the flights as possible. Hostels have made accommodation crazy affordable, but how can we get those airline prices down to give us the ultimate cheap trip deal?

Comparison sites are your best friend

It may sound like a ‘duh‘ moment, but people don’t use comparison sites nearly enough. Not just using one comparison site, oh no, make sure you’re comparing comparison sites with other comparison sites.

You may have a favourite already, but it’s super important that you shop around as much as possible, as even the ‘cheapest‘ travel sites may not be giving you the best deal. Take a look at the airlines directly and sign up for their newsletters to be notified of any sales or discounts that might be happening.

Another little trick is to clear your browser cache. Websites use cookies to store information about how we use and navigate websites and if you’re having a grand old time looking for cheap deals, these sites have been known to increase the prices to make you buy quicker.

Clear your cache and even better, find a different computer entirely to check that the prices are not being fiddled to make you pay more!

Timing is everything

Now this isn’t a sponsored post, but I will give a massive shout out to my favourite flight finding tool, Skyscanner.net.

This website is extremely helpful if you’re looking for the cheapest flights to your destination. All you have to do is use the ‘cheapest month‘ option when you’re searching for flights to your chosen destination and voila! Skyscanner will show you the cheapest dates to head to your destination and give you the freedom to find the best deal!

Not sure where you want to go? You can also use the ‘search everywhere‘ search function to find the cheapest places to go for the cheapest flight prices. I used this recently when I decided I was well over due a solo travel trip and now I’m off to Croatia, woo hoo!

Do you really need to choose your seat?

Many airlines will try and squeeze every tiny bit of extra cash out of you once you’ve booked your flight (*cough* Ryan Air *cough*) this means offering you extras that, lets be honest, you really don’t need.

Things like booking your seats for example, do you really need to specify where on the plane you need to sit? You’ll all get there at the same time anyway and although it’s nice to be able to look out of the window, you can see it from the aisle if needed.

Avoiding these hidden little costs can help you save a huge amount over time, some airlines will charge you around £30 to book your seats and that’s money you could use to do a super awesome activity when you get to where you’re going!

Can you shove everything into hand luggage?

Packing light is a skill that I am proud to say I have mastered over these last few years and it is something that has saved me a lot of money and time!

Gone are the days when you could go to Mallorca with a giant suitcase for free, filled with a load of ‘just in case‘ items (haha just in case in a case!) these days, taking hold luggage will cost you anywhere upwards of £20 a case depending on the weight. Take a long hard look at what you’re packing, do you actually need those 10 different bikinis for a 4 day get away?

Mastering the art of hand luggage is not only more convenient when it comes to collecting bags at the airport, but it can also prevent you from taking a range of items that you just don’t need, and you’ll have to repack when it’s time to fly home!

Finding your Cheapest Flights

Finding the cheapest flights isn’t just about clicking on a few comparison sites and settling for the lowest price that pops up, there are so many other smaller ways that you can really get the most for your money.

If you are a frequent flier, look into collecting air miles. So many people have had a lovely upgrade to first class, simply because they collected enough miles, so don’t miss out.

Also make sure to sign-up for airline newsletters, to be kept in the loop whenever they have flash sales or discounts, this also applies to their social media accounts!
